Hold On Tight - November Update

Wednesday, November 8, 2017

We survived another Halloween!  I was happy to see that the class wasn’t any more crazy than normal after all the sugar they had. Just the normal crazy :). That could be a coincidence or a result of more vicious methods - such as their parents raiding the bounty - either way, I was cool with it. I know that personally, when I was growing up, my dad explained that he is/was the tax man and that for safety reasons, he had to eat all the Rocket candies and O’Henry bars - seemed legit at the time and I’m not going to lie, the “Teacher Tax” I taught them about worked out just fine.

We have Parent/Teacher...

Kick Off - September Update

Monday, September 11, 2017

So it's the best time of year. Even though the summer is over, football is back, Major League Baseball is heating up for playoffs and I've kicked off another year of adventures in grade five. We all survived the first week together and I just wanted to give you all an update on some of the things we will be doing in the coming weeks. Going forward, you can expect to get one of these larger updates about once a month, usually at beginning of the month, so that we are all on the same page about what is going on.

At any point this year, you can check out all things grade 5 on this website or...

Tick Tock - June Update

Sunday, June 11, 2017

So this is some real math coming at you… we’re looking at 13.5 more days of school until Mr. Polsky will be at the Canada Day Blue Jays game against the Red Sox. WE are excited. I guess that also means we’re looking at 13.5 days until I have to say goodbye to this fantastic group of student - seriously my least favourite part of the year. Anyways… moving on before we get mushy and sentimental... June kicked off at a furious pace and we just finished the best week ever; 3 field trips in 5 days plus Sports Day. I don’t know about you, but I slept like a rock on Friday night. With jsut 13.5 days of school...

Can't Stop the Train - May Update

Monday, May 1, 2017

Welcome to the new website and home for all things grade five. I finished moving most parts of the website over but will be updating and fixing the stragglers here soon. It’s always a work in progress so, like always, please let me know if there are any broken links or shenanigans and I’ll get fixing them right away. That said, and like the title of the post, we’re moving and busier than ever (and loving it). Here’s a rundown on what we’ve been up to and what we are looking forward to this month.

Math - Patterns & Geometry

With the students all finished our work with fractions...

Bring on the Madness - March Update

Thursday, March 16, 2017

So the Flames’ win streak is over, sadly, but that’s okay because we keep winning here at school (cheesy, I know, but just let me have it). It’s been a wild ride lately and I apologize for not getting an update out to you all sooner. Thank you all for your support over the last few weeks. Between the Hitmen ‘Be Brave’ Anti-bullying hockey game, followed the next day with a trip to the Glenbow Museum, from Alien In-Line Skating, Fish Creek Idol, March Madness, take apart times, Picasso painting - it’s hard sometimes to catch your breath. And yet... I wouldn’t have it any other way. Read on to see the...

It’s a Bigly New Year - January Update

Thursday, January 19, 2017

Can’t stop. Won’t stop. We’re back at it and no joke, it’s almost February. There’s not an ounce of quit in the students and we’re flying. In all areas, we’re busy learning and kicking butt (thats a technical term). With the weather having finally taken a turn for the nicer, while you’re getting the first sunburn of the year, take a little read below to see what we’re up to in the crazy world of grade 5.

Math - Measurement

We’ve moved onto tackling the concepts of measurement, shape and space. We began by focusing on the Metric System and understanding the relationships between...
