Final Countdown - June Update

Saturday, June 1, 2019 4:25 AM

Yeah right it’s June. That’s insane. Yeah right the Raptors are up 1-0 against Golden State in the finals. Yeah right Drake still hasn’t been fined for his shenanigans courtside. Yeah right Game of Thrones is finished. Yeah right we had apocalypse smoke yesterday and it’s all gone today. Well… whatdya know. This is real life. Welcome to June. I can’t believe I only have one more month with this class - that’s depressing. Anyways… We’re gearing up for a good one so here’s what you need to know.

SOGO Running Residency

We are so lucky and excited to have SOGO Adventure Running join us again this year. Next week, we will participate in activities here at the school and down in Fish Creek Park (provided the smoke subsides). Please ensure that your child is dressed for the weather: layers, hat, water bottle, comfortable running shoes, sunscreen, bug spray, or rain wear if needed (we will attend the residency, rain or shine). Please note that on Wednesday and Friday, the grade 5’s will be leaving the school right away to walk down to Fish Creek Park, as we have to be at our meeting point by 9am. Please ensure that your child is on-time for these days, so they don’t miss out on our residency time. On Wednesday, we will spend the entire morning and lunch hour at the park so please send a really good lunch with your child for that day. Also, on Friday, all families are welcome to join in for the family run at Fish Creek Park from 12:30 – 2:30pm.

Here is our SOGO schedule for the week:

Monday 9:00 – 10:00am (Fish Creek School field)

Tuesday 9:00 – 10:00am (Fish Creek School field)

Wednesday 9:00 – 10:30am & fieldtrip 10:30am – 12:30pm (Fish Creek Park)

Friday 9:00 – 10:30am & Family Run 12:30 – 2:30pm (Fish Creek Park)

MidSun Carnival

We will be heading to the carnival on Wednesday afternoon after lunch. Students are welcome to buy wristbands/tickets on Monday, June 3rd or at the carnival.

Language Arts

We have started our final novel study for the year. It’s another one by Gordon Korman, called “Schooled”. As with all our novel studies, hopefully your child is able to share plenty of details from the book. The main character is partial to wearing tie-dye, so in a few weeks, we will be tie-dying our own t-shirts at school. We have scheduled the afternoon of Thursday, June 20th for this, and will need some parent volunteers! Please let me know if you'd be interested in helping out (no prior tie-dying experience is needed).

We are also starting our final creative writing unit on stuck stories. Students will be asked to write their own stuck stories where they are accidentally shrunk and have to find a way to become un-shrunk. I’m looking forward to reading all the shenanigans that come along with this.

Math

We are right in the middle of our Measurement focus as part of Shape and Space. Students have practiced how to properly use a ruler, and learned different units of measurement and how to convert between them. Most recently, students have learned about perimeter, area, and volume, and used Minecraft to demonstrate their skills. Next we will look at capacity, as well as move into geometry with angles, and transformations. Everything you need to support or extend your child is available here. Prior to the end of the year, we will also complete a mini unit on Probability. We will also be having our final fact frenzy next week!!

Science

We are nearing the end of our Classroom Chemistry unit and have saved some of our most exciting (and messiest) experiments for last. Students will experiment with diet coke and mentos, baking soda ‘grenades’, and elephant toothpaste, to learn about reversible and irreversible changes and acids and bases. We will end the year by completing our Weather unit. Hopefully the actual weather cooperates so we can complete most of this outside.

Social Studies

In case you didn’t hear, our Regions album release party was a huge success. The songs your children wrote about the Regions of Canada were absolutely amazing, and you can listen to them here

We will have one more museokit before the year is up. This one will be about the Famous Five. I’ve put together some Famous Five Resources and Links to help support what we learn in class as well as to support you in learning this important part of our history.

Have a great weekend and GO RAPS GO.
